Sciatica is a term which means irritation of the sciatic nerve which causes pain down the back of the leg. The sciatic nerve is the biggest nerve in your body, and there are two of them – one down each leg. The lumbar spinal nerves converge together to form the nerve.
There are many different causes for sciatic pain, such as disc bulge or herniation, tight muscles entrapping the nerve, arthritis, and other injuries to the nerve. It can be the sciatic nerve itself which is irritated, or it can be one of the lumbar spinal nerves in your lower back that causes the sciatic nerve irritation.
Some people call “sciatica” any pain which runs down the leg, but there are many nerves in your leg. True sciatica is irritation of the sciatic nerve which runs down the back of the leg. Nerve pain in the front of your leg is from a different nerve and is not considered “sciatica.” The pain can feel like many things: sharp, shooting, numbness, tingling, achy, dull, or pins and needles.
